VLC, in late 2015, was a 100% virtual online conference organized by @RaphSEO.
I spoke there as a duo with @LeMoussel.
It’s a slightly strange experience, since you’re alone in front of your screen, with no physical feedback from the audience.
At that VLC, we presented what was, back then, just a lab experiment.
A proof of concept.
A tool. No, what am I saying. A pile of code and scripts (C#, Python, Shell, PHP and JavaScript…) that could crawl a site “the right way” and build a graphical representation of it, computing the internal PageRank of every URL along the way.
Back then, everything was manual, there were parameters to tweak, things to fix ad hoc depending on the site… and above all, it was only an experiment.
In the talk, we explained the basic principles of our idea and showed how it could be applied.
The example we gave was how to do PR sculpting on an out-of-the-box WordPress blog, showing over time and over successive optimizations how the link juice moves and concentrates, and how, even with WordPress, you can build things that are well structured and true to the spirit of the semantic cocoon (cocon sémantique).
The feedback, and the crawl requests, poured in so heavily that this experiment became a full-fledged tool: it was the ancestor of Cocon.Se.
The videos
The replay of the talk is available in 3 parts.
Part 1: Introduction, the problems with common visualizations, how the project came about, and the more technical side of crawling.
Part 2: The focus is on visualizations, to show how PageRank flows internally, on WordPress sites (but not only!).
Part 3: Q&A, with RaphSEO relaying the questions.
